What are Senior Life Settlement Policies?
Senior Life Settlements are often aggregated in large portfolios purchased by Qualified Institutional Buyers and Accredited Investors, such as Warren Buffet of Berkshire Hathaway. Senior Life Settlement (“SLS”) policies are U.S. traded life insurance policies of
individuals over 65 years of age, with a life expectancy of three to 15 years.
The SLS industry has created a competitive secondary market for life insurance
policies. Consumers are now free to sell their policies in an open market for the
highest available price, normally well above the cash surrender value offered by
insurance companies.
The SLS market is large and rapidly growing, estimated to reach $160 billion
over the next few years (Bernstein Research: US Life Insurance, Perspectives
on the US Life Settlement Market).
